There's something I really want to share with people...

Went for a Peer Advisor talk last night... and there was this really brilliant speaker who gave a talk on personality types and how to get along with ppl. It started out promising to be a boring night and I sat there wondering why I put myself through such "self-improvement" talks all the time. I had to go for this one cos I'm a Peer Advisor for Freshmen in Fall 2004.... so I didn't really have a choice. But I learnt so much about myself last night... it wasn't just about identifying my personality type like when we did MBTI test etc (by the way... its been 6 years and I'm still ISFJ... looks like the test did work when I was in Sec 2!). Yeah anyway... it wasn't just about knowing my own personality, but we did this Colors thing. Dunno if anyone has heard about it.... Orange Blue Green and Gold. Each color is characterized by a set of behaviors and personalities, motivators, stressors, strengths etc, and u basically rank urself by color, from which one u think u fit best with to the least. So I'm Green, then a mix of Orange and Blue... and last of all Gold.

The speaker talked about how to get along with other "colors", and after a while I realized that sometimes when we dislike how other ppl behave, its just cos we clash on certain aspects of our personalities. The "Can't Stand him/her" attitude and negative energy can perhaps be channeled to understanding how the individual's personality contributes to his/her actions. All the colors were good... as in, all had strengths that I would like to have too... so there wasn't any chance of people CHOOSING colors cos they thought the color was good.

Incidentally, 30-45% of Americans are Orange. About 15% or Blue, and another 30-40% are Yellow. There's about 8% of Americans who are Green, and of those, almost 80% are Males. Heh, and I'm Green. Al Gore was a green. So are most engineering professors. The education systems are built to recognize "Green" characteristics... but of course, this by no means indicate that Greens are smarter than others.

Here's a brief description of each color: (its gonna be a long blog)

So here's what Green ppl are supposed to be like... I find it sooooo ME. Greens have an unsatiable thirst for knowledge, are are information junkies that read newspapers from top to bottom and surf the net for anything and everything. They are very concerned about knowing and learning more things. Greens are futuristic and very visionary, they think about the future a lot... plans ahead and considers all options. Decision making becomes harder to some extent because Green ppl try to think rationally but sometimes from too many directions. Or they feel that they need more information before deciding therefore Greens take a long time to make decisions. Greens need time alone, and like to work independently, especially if they feel that whoever they need to work with are incompetent or irresponsible, which they often judge by using their own abilities as a marker. Greens are perfectionists and revel in competitiveness. They like to be in charge and like to have a say in how things are run (unless they decide that the current leader is competent enough, then they gladly follow). They like intellectual challenge and are motivated when they can do things that other people can't, or when they are outdo themselves. Yah... Greens compete with themselves too. Greens don't like to share their emotions and thoughts with many people, and they tend to only have 1 or 2 ppl they share their lives with. They appear cool and calm on the surface but have underlying emotions that they seldom share with others (apart from the 1 or 2). Its hard to get close to a Green person, cos Greens aren't keen on establishing intimate relationships with most people.

So what's Gold? (The one I feel I'm the least of) People who like rules and regulations and organization and neatness. Golds are people who do things the right way, and believe that guidelines and proper channels are there for a reason. They like officiality, are always punctual, and like to plan their schedules very carefully. They don't like last minute work and they are extremely good at managing their time. They are focused and do not get distracted from their goals easily. Sometimes Golds may be stubborn to change and new ideas (unless u propose ur ideas to them through proper channels) and they tend to prefer order. Like u speak first, then u, then u... then back to you etc. They are often the background people who provide excellent logistical support and are extremely reliable and responsible.

Oranges are spontanesous individuals who think fast and act fast. They like to cut corners to reach their goals in the most efficient way. They hate ppl who beat about the bush and tend to be more blunt and straight to the point. They love to have fun and like to do only the things they enjoy or find FUN. They believe that there is a way to break every rule and there is always a reason to do so... they can't stand regulations and guidelines. Oranges are the people who don't read manuals and try to set up stuff based on their own instincts.

Blues are people lovers... they like building personal relationships with people they work with and they like direct contact e.g. face to face meetings as opposed to emails. They prefer group work and care about everyone's feelings, which may hamper their efficiency or performance depending on the circumstances. Its vital to them that everyone benefits from an activity. Blues like to be praised and be told that they are good, they need reinforcement from others and are motivated when they are appreciated for their efforts. Blues tend to be the "Chicken Soup for the soul", "Thank-you-good-luck-encouragement notes" kind of people.

These are just the brief descriptions... there are much more detailed stuff which i obviously can't write down, but anyone who wants to know more just ask me.
